How to Care for Your Feet in Summer

Summer – the time for vacations, holidays, and both near and far travels. During this period, our feet need special attention. Here are some tips that can help our feet survive the heat, but also fully experience the benefits of summer – the only time of the year when we walk barefoot so often.

Feet need to breathe – let's not hinder them

In summer, feet need freedom, air, and cooling. Let's not trap them in full shoes or socks. It's best to walk barefoot as much as possible or wear sandals. If we choose the latter, pay attention to the sandals' lining and how well they stay on your feet. It's important that the material is made from natural fabric, which prevents feet from slipping when they sweat. In this case, natural hemp used in Caballo Blanco sandals is perfect, as it also has antibacterial properties.

Of course, we can't always wear sandals or go barefoot. In such cases, our feet will be grateful if we wear soft, lightweight, and breathable shoes. The Explorer model in the summer version is a great choice.

How to prevent foot sweating?

Feet tend to sweat more in shoes, so it's important to use the right socks. Avoid those made from synthetic fabrics and opt for natural materials. Bamboo fiber socks are thin and soft to the touch, making them a great choice for hot weather. Alternatively, you can use silk or cotton socks. To ensure proper circulation, always choose non-compression socks.

An additional solution for preventing foot sweating is to sprinkle cosmetic talcum powder into the socks. It is inexpensive and can be bought at a pharmacy or drugstore. Talcum powder absorbs moisture, providing comfort and protection against foot fungus.

Talcum powder is also recommended if you use toe separators – special inserts that correct toe positioning and help with conditions like bunions, hammer toes, or claw toes.

Feet need sun protection

The delicate skin on the tops of your feet is more prone to sunburn than other parts of your body. When sunbathing on the beach, bury your feet in the sand, and when cycling in the sun, wear shoes that cover this sensitive part of your skin. When applying sunscreen, don't forget your feet. If you happen to miss them and your skin gets sunburned, aloe gel or cool compresses will help soothe it.

Why do feet swell in summer?

Our body needs more water in the summer. If we don't provide enough fluids, tissues will draw water from blood vessels, causing swelling. Feet may also swell after traveling, especially when we remain seated for a long time. This issue also affects people who have desk jobs – it’s recommended to use a footrest so that your feet are about 20-30 cm above the floor.

How to get rid of foot swelling?

Drink more water, preferably with added lemon juice, which helps with fluid absorption. Place swollen feet at the level of your hips for a while (while sitting, you can place them on another chair, and while lying down, put pillows under them).

Feet love coolness in summer

On hot days, give your feet a chance to immerse in cool water. They’ll be lucky if we can provide them with a walk along the beach or by the lake. However, if that’s not possible, find a river or stream nearby and head there on a hot weekend to cool down. If all else fails, a garden pool or a basin with cool water will give your feet a break from the high temperatures.

Take care of your foot health and your entire body. In the summer, make sure to drink the right amount of water and provide your feet with proper ventilation and sun protection.
