Summer doesn’t abound with snow or puddles when it melts like at the beginning of spring, but that doesn’t mean we can take a softer approach to shoe cleaning. It’s just that we will face slightly different problems. If we want our new shoes to serve us for years to come, there are a few rules to remember, which we will present in this article.
Shoe care in summer – challenges
One of the main questions may be what will actually harm our shoes in the summer. Variable weather (rain and heat), vacations, excursions in forests and meadows – all translate into a strong impact on footwear. What exactly should we watch out for?
Sweat
The first and quite obvious problem will be sweating feet during summer excursions. Here a lot depends on the person who wears the footwear, so we do not want to give magic advice , “how not to sweat”.
First of all, the most important thing will be a good choice of footwear. Artificial materials that can be found in net footwear will negatively affect the air flow inside, and thus increase sweating. Sweat will give the perfect environment for bacteria or musty odor to grow, not only ruining the shoe, but also providing an unpleasant smelling experience.
The best choice for summer are leather shoes made of grain leather, which are perfectly breathable. They are also very elegant, so they are suitable for everyday wear, work and meetings.
If you need trekking shoes, sports shoes or just casual shoes, it’s worth looking at those with microfiber, which is not only easy to clean, but also perfectly air-permeable (such as our Explorer 2.0 model- made of suede leather and microfiber).
Frequent airing of the inside of the shoes will also be helpful in preventing bad odor. Don’t keep them in the basement or stairwell after removal, but put them out on the balcony for a few hours, for example.
Dry, hot air
Another external factor affecting footwear will be hot and dry air. This can adversely affect the material of the shoe, causing discoloration or abrasion. Depending on the type of leather, you may want to consider a special shoe polish or even a shoe impregnator, which, just as it protects shoes from moisture, can also protect them from the sun. Shoe waterproofing and shoe polish are not limited to winter.
Shoes made of natural leather will be far more resistant to heat than those made of artificial agents, which can deform under heat.
Dust and fines
This problem accompanies us regardless of the season, fortunately, the remedy is very simple. Just clean your shoes regularly and you’re done!
It is especially worth taking care of this point at the end of summer or autumn, when we put summer shoes in the closet. The worst thing we can do for leather shoes is to leave them dirty for several months in a poorly ventilated room. Much depends on the specific type of leather, but if you stash them cleaned in a less humid place – we guarantee they will last longer.
How and with what to clean shoes?
For different types of leather and footwear material, you need to use the right products so as not to damage them. We have already written about taking care of shoes in detail in this article, but we will briefly remind you what to clean shoes with and how to do it well.
Care of leather shoes
Cleaning leather shoes is a relatively simple procedure. It is enough to:
- clean the leather surface well with a wet cloth, for example, and then wipe it dry,
use a special leather shoe polish or cleaner,
impregnate the leather with a paste or impregnating agent.
And you’re done!
Care of suede shoes
The case of suede shoes is slightly different. Suede is a material that can be easily damaged, so we recommend more gentle cleaning and wiping with a cloth.
To protect your suede shoes, you can also use a special product that will protect against water and dirt, such as XNANO PRO.
How to take care of barefoot footwear?
